Kuala Lumpur is relatively a very safe tourist destination. But there are some few things to avoid while staying in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
- Traffic Jam. Because Malaysia offers very affordable cars, many people can own one. That’s why traffic jam is one of the problems of KL during rush hour. Usually, traffic starts at 5:30 pm until around 7 pm during weekdays after work. So, if you are in KL, avoid traffic jam by taking the train, by walking if your place is nearby or by avoiding congested areas such as Jalan Tun Razak, Bukit Bintang, Jalan Raja Chulan and many other areas. Or you can install the app Waze because it can give you which congested areas to avoid real-time and can give you optional route to your destination.
- Taxi drivers who ask for a higher taxi fares. Taxi fares are supposedly measured by meter. If a taxi driver asks you to pay a certain amount and not using meter, it is better not to take that taxi because some may ask you double the exact fare. Taxis on stand by near KLCC except for the blue executive ones, since those are really expensive, taxis near Berjaya Time Square, Petaling Street and sometimes any where in KL will ask you for high fare. You’d better go a bit far away from those areas to take taxi. If you’re in KLCC, just cross the road across and wait for taxi near H&M. If you’re in Berjaya Time Square, also cross the road using the overpass, you’ll reach the bus stop near a sports wear shop and wait for a taxi that does not ask for a high fare. If you’re in Petaling Street or Chinatown, you also just have to cross the overpass, you will reach the taxi stand near the Kota Raya building and take the taxis there. But sometimes they ask higher fare, so, look for another one. They won’t bother if you don’t take them. Or better yet, install the application MyTeksi. This application will send a taxi to your place and drives you to your destination. You just to add 2RM for government tax. But they will use meter for the fare.
- Spicy food. If you are not into spicy food or you have never been a fan of chilli, then go easy on Malaysian food. Most of their dishes are filled with pepper. But you want to try some of their spicy dishes, make sure to order a milder one. And if you are already a spicy hot dishes fan, you can try these dishes.
- Petty Theft. Though there were very few cases of theft in KL, but it’s better to be careful. Cases like hand phone and hand bag snatching by someone riding in a motorcycle occurred in one of the dark places where not so many people are around.
